Spoornet has awarded a follow-up multimillion rand contract to ALSTOM Transport Equipment and Projects (TEP) for the manufacture and supply of Agate electronic control systems for a further 99 x Class 1 8E locomotives.

This follows initial testing on one of three prototype systems ordered two years ago and supplied in mid-2000. Agate (Advanced Generic ALSTOM Traction Electronics) has been engineered and supplied for the 1 8E by ALSTOM's Equipment Electronic Systems (EES) unit in Villeurbanne, France.

The development of Agate, which replaces the conventional relay system currently in use in the 6E1 locos, forms part of an extensive multimillion rand upgrade involving a number of subsystems that also include introduction of rheostatic braking, electronic vigilance, consist adhesion management systems, a high speed circuit breaker and upgrading of the driver's cab.
